We show that at least one representative of a broad class of algorithms (regularizers that reduce network complexity) extracts independent features as a by-product. This algorithm is Flat Minimum Search (FMS), a recent general method for finding low-complexity networks with high generalization capability. FMS works by minimizing both training error and required weight precision. According to our theoretical analysis the hidden layer of an FMS-trained autoassociator attempts at coding each input by a sparse code with as few simple features as possible. In experiments the method extracts optimal codes for difficult versions of the "noisy bars" benchmark problem by separating the underlying sources, whereas ICA and PCA fail. Real world images are coded with fewer bits per pixel than by ICA or PCA.

Enhancing magnetic signals in unexploded ordnances (UXO) detection based on edge-preserved stable downward continuation method
This paper describes an efficient edge-preserved regularization algorithm for downward continuation of magnetic data in detection of unexploded ordnance (UXO). The magnetic anomalies arising from multi-source UXO can overlap at a height over the ground surface, while causative sources may not be readily separated due to low level of signal-to-noise ratio of the observed data. To effectively the...

Background: Municipal solid waste is a serious environmental issue in human societies. The source separation is a necessity for efficient municipal waste management (MSW). Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the source separation rate of MSW in several Iranian cities, as well as to identify the determinance of the participation level in source separation. Methods: In this study, ...

متن کاملRegularization Methods for Blind Deconvolution and Blind Source Separation Problems
This paper is devoted to blind deconvolution and blind separation problems. Blind deconvolution is the identiication of a point spread function and an input signal from an observation of their convolution. Blind source separation is the recovery of a vector of input signals from a vector of observed signals, which are mixed by a linear (unknown) operator. We show that both problems are paradigm...
متن کاملEnhancing audio source separability using spectro-temporal regularization with NMF
We propose a spectro-temporal regularization approach for NMF that accounts for a source’s spectral variability over time. The regularization terms allow NMF to adapt the spectral basis matrices optimally to reduce mismatch between the spectral characteristics of sources observed during training and encountered during separation. We first tested our algorithm on a simulated source separation ta...
